Celebrating the legacy of one of the world’s most extraordinary palace hotels, Taj Hotels has unveiled Jewel of the Lake: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, a meticulously crafted volume that documents the rich history, architectural brilliance, and enduring allure of the iconic Taj Lake Palace. Set amidst the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola, the palace serves as both subject and inspiration for this immersive publication.

Developed under the creative direction of Rymn Massand, the book combines evocative storytelling with striking visual imagery to present a multi-layered narrative. It brings to life the people, craftsmanship, and cultural influences that have shaped the palace’s nearly 300-year legacy, offering readers a comprehensive and engaging perspective on its evolution.

Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO, Indian Hotels Company Limited, highlighted the strategic and emotional significance of the property: “Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur holds a very special place in our hearts. It marked our expansion beyond The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, laying the foundation for a remarkable hospitality legacy. Today, it continues to embody the Living Legacies of Taj, preserving heritage while delivering exceptional guest experiences.”

Historical Significance

Originally constructed in 1746 as the summer residence of Maharana Jagat Singh II of the Mewar dynasty, the palace—then known as Jagniwas—has transformed over centuries from a royal retreat into one of the world’s most celebrated luxury hotels. Despite this evolution, it has retained the artistic traditions and cultural essence of Mewar’s illustrious past.

Jewel of the Lake curates archival material, rare anecdotes, and compelling imagery to provide a deeper understanding of the palace’s journey.

Key themes include:

  • The history and legacy of the House of Mewar
  • Architectural excellence of the marble palace
  • Personal and historical narratives that define the guest experience

The publication also features insights from Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, who describes the palace as both an ancestral residence and a living cultural legacy that continues to welcome global visitors.

Recognition and Positioning

The Taj Lake Palace has recently been awarded the prestigious Michelin Three Keys, reinforcing its standing among the world’s most distinguished luxury hospitality destinations.

Jewel of the Lake: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur stands as a fitting tribute to nearly three centuries of heritage, craftsmanship, and hospitality excellence. The book not only preserves the legacy of the palace but also strengthens the brand narrative of Taj Hotels.

It is currently available exclusively at the Taj Lake Palace for guests, enhancing their on-property experience through deeper cultural engagement.
