Two Peninsulas, One Membership: Inside IHCL's Loyalty Pact with Starhotels
By binding Taj InnerCircle – NeuPass to Starhotels' I AM STAR, IHCL isn't just adding another perk. It is borrowing aviation's oldest trick — letting a member's status travel further than any one company can build.

The most valuable thing a hotel loyalty programme can give a guest is not a discount. It is the quiet assurance that, wherever they land, they are already expected. The difficulty has always been geography: no single group's map covers the world, and building it one hotel at a time is slow and costly. Aviation solved this a generation ago by stitching rival carriers into alliances, letting a passenger's status fly further than any one airline could. Hospitality has been slower to follow — which is what makes IHCL's latest move worth pausing over.
On July 1, 2026, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India's largest hospitality company, announced a strategic partnership between its Taj InnerCircle – NeuPass platform and I AM STAR, the loyalty programme of Starhotels, Italy's leading private hotel group by revenue. On paper it is a reciprocal-benefits deal. Read more closely, it is a piece of quiet map-making — two houses that dominate their home markets agreeing to lend each other the ground the other lacks.
The complementarity is almost too neat. IHCL commands India, with a portfolio of 640 hotels — 263 of them still in the pipeline — spread across four continents and more than 300 locations, yet its centre of gravity remains unmistakably Indian. Starhotels commands Italy, with 34 properties and over 4,500 rooms anchored in Florence, Milan, Rome and Venice, reaching beyond the peninsula only to London, Paris and New York. The two do not compete for a single guest. Each simply begins where the other runs out of rooms.
For the member, the arithmetic is refreshingly plain. Taj InnerCircle – NeuPass guests unlock exclusive savings across select Starhotels properties; I AM STAR members gain a deeper line into IHCL's portfolio in India and beyond. Both sides are paid in the same currency — preferred rates and savings on rooms, dining and spa, delivered through authenticated journeys across each brand's platforms. On the Indian side the reach runs across Taj, Claridges Collection, Brij, SeleQtions, Clarks, Gateway, Vivanta, Tree of Life and amã Stays & Trails; on the Italian, across the historic Starhotels Collezione and the contemporary Starhotels Premium.

“India–Europe travel is on the rise, driven by strong outbound demand and increasing global interest in India’s cultural and leisure experiences. Through this partnership with Starhotels, Taj InnerCircle – NeuPass extends its presence into key European markets, enabling members to access a wider network of hotels and benefits that enhance their overall travel journey.”

What gives the deal its timing is the corridor it sits astride. As Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO, IHCL, put it: "India–Europe travel is on the rise, driven by strong outbound demand and increasing global interest in India's cultural and leisure experiences. Through this partnership with Starhotels, Taj InnerCircle – NeuPass extends its presence into key European markets, enabling members to access a wider network of hotels and benefits that enhance their overall travel journey." The traffic now moves firmly in both directions — affluent Indians heading west in record numbers, European travellers looking east with fresh curiosity. A loyalty network that speaks to both is worth considerably more than one that speaks to either.
For Starhotels, the logic is the mirror image. "This partnership represents a significant step in the international development of I AM STAR and reflects Starhotels' commitment to creating ever more valuable experiences for our guests," said Elisabetta Fabri, Starhotels' President and CEO. "Through our collaboration with IHCL's Taj InnerCircle - NeuPass, we are further expanding the travel opportunities and benefits available to our members, while strengthening I AM STAR's ability to attract new customers and provide access to an international network of outstanding destinations and properties." It is a natural instinct for a house that has spent more than four decades exporting a particular idea of Italy, one it now formalises through La Grande Bellezza – The Dream Factory, its patronage project for Italian high craftsmanship. That idea of Italy has always been the real product, sold room by room.

And that is the deeper kinship beneath the commercial one. Both groups trade, in the end, in a national idea of hospitality — the bellezza Starhotels has made its signature, and the particular Indian warmth IHCL has carried since Jamsetji Tata opened The Taj Mahal Palace in Bombay in 1903, and which has since made Taj, by Brand Finance's reckoning, the world's strongest hotel brand of 2025. Reciprocal rates are merely the mechanism. What actually crosses the border is a way of looking after a guest.
Whether members feel the difference will depend, as it always does, on how generous the redemptions prove to be. But the direction is unmistakable, and it is the one aviation took long ago: away from walled gardens and towards open networks, in which belonging to one great house increasingly means being welcomed by another. For the traveller between Delhi and Florence, or Mumbai and Rome, the map just grew a good deal larger.
