Zerodha founders Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath have acquired a 6.72% stake in Viceroy Hotels during the September quarter. The investment was made through two investment vehicles, Kamath Associates and Nksquared.

The move comes at a significant stage in Viceroy Hotels’ recovery. The company had entered the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) following years of leveraged expansion under its former promoter, with creditors owed more than ₹1,150 crore. At one point, liquidation was also considered, while trading in the company’s shares had been suspended.

A New Hospitality Bet

A turning point came in October 2023, when the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) approved a resolution plan submitted by Anirudh Agro Farms. Fresh capital was subsequently infused through its subsidiary, Loko Hospitality. Following implementation of the plan, Viceroy Hotels resumed trading on the NSE and BSE in April 2024.

Today, the company operates Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott properties in Hyderabad and is seeking additional capital through a ₹105-crore rights issue, priced at ₹115 per share. The fund-raise is partly aimed at meeting public-shareholding requirements following the increase in promoter holding after the resolution process.

Viceroy Hotels is also expanding beyond its existing portfolio. In December 2025, shareholders approved the acquisition of SLN Terminus Hotels and Resorts for ₹206 crore. The property, which operates Marriott-branded executive apartments, adds another hospitality asset to the company’s portfolio as it looks to build its next phase of growth.
