IHCL has secured trademark registration for the Taj sonic sound, making it the first hospitality company in India to protect a sound mark associated with an iconic hotel brand. The milestone marks a significant advancement in brand protection within the Indian hospitality sector.
Commenting on the development, Rajendra Misra, Executive Vice President & General Counsel, IHCL, said, “Being recognised as the world’s strongest hotel brand brings with it the responsibility to lead across all dimensions, including how brand equity is protected. This sound mark registration reinforces our position as a pioneer in brand protection and reflects a forward-looking approach to intellectual property aligned with the evolving ways guests engage with our brands.”
The registration legally safeguards Taj’s distinctive sonic identity as a trademark, formally recognising sound as a core brand asset. As hospitality increasingly shifts towards immersive, experience-led engagement, sonic branding has emerged as a powerful tool to build emotional recall, trust, and familiarity beyond visual cues.
This development builds on Taj’s long-standing commitment to progressive intellectual property strategies. Previously, the brand secured trademark protection for the three-dimensional shape of the Taj Mahal Hotel, Bombay, underscoring its focus on preserving and protecting distinctive elements of its heritage.
IHCL was represented in the matter by Fidus Law Chambers, led by Managing Partner Shwetasree Majumder, with support from Partner Astha Negi and Senior Associate Umang Gola.
