India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced the appointment of former British Airways and IAG CEO William ‘Willie’ Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals.
William Walsh brings extensive leadership experience across the global aviation sector, with senior roles at Aer Lingus, British Airways, and International Airlines Group (IAG). He served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 and later led IAG from 2011. He currently heads the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said, “Willie is an exceptional global aviation leader with a proven track record across multiple airlines. His expertise in managing large-scale operations and navigating complex market dynamics positions him well to drive IndiGo’s continued growth in an increasingly competitive global environment. His appointment marks a new chapter for the airline.”
Managing Director Rahul Bhatia added, “As IndiGo enters a new phase of transformation and growth, we are pleased to welcome Willie. His global perspective, operational expertise, deep industry knowledge, and values-driven leadership make him ideally suited to guide the airline at this pivotal stage.”
Commenting on his appointment, William Walsh said, “The airline has a strong foundation, a clear vision, and an outstanding reputation. I look forward to working with the team to drive excellence, innovation, and sustainable value for all stakeholders in a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.” He will join the airline by August 3, following the recent exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers.
In his new role, Walsh will oversee IndiGo’s overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on operational performance, network expansion, commercial strategy, and customer experience.
