Araiya Hotels & Resorts expands its footprint in Kerala with the opening of Soul by Araiya Paithalmala – A Vihaara Resort, an 18-key mountain retreat set amid the mist-covered landscapes of the Western Ghats.
Owned by Subhakaran K V and family and managed by Araiya Hotels & Resorts, the property represents the latest addition to the hospitality company’s growing portfolio of boutique hotels and retreats in India. It also signals Araiya’s strategy of entering emerging leisure destinations through intimate, experience-led properties rooted in their surroundings.
Located approximately 90 minutes from Kannur International Airport, Soul by Araiya Paithalmala is positioned for leisure travellers seeking short mountain escapes, wellness-focused stays and nature-led holidays.
A Boutique Retreat
Soul by Araiya Paithalmala comprises 17 Deluxe Rooms and one Honeymoon Suite, with accommodation designed to maximise views across the surrounding hills and valleys. Warm interiors, contemporary amenities and a nature-inspired design language define the rooms, while the property’s relatively small inventory is intended to create a greater sense of privacy and personalised hospitality.
The resort’s positioning reflects a broader shift in leisure travel towards smaller, destination-sensitive properties where landscape, wellness and local experiences form an integral part of the stay. Beyond accommodation, Soul by Araiya has developed its guest experience around Paithalmala’s natural setting. Guided nature walks, sunrise and sunset trails, stargazing and mindfulness programmes are among the experiences planned for guests.
Travellers can also explore nearby trekking routes, coffee estates and the region’s biodiversity, creating opportunities to experience northern Kerala beyond conventional sightseeing. The approach aligns with Araiya’s destination-led hospitality philosophy, where the hotel functions not simply as a place to stay but as a gateway to its wider location.

Leadership Perspective
Amruda Nair, Founder and Director, Araiya Hotels & Resorts, said the opening introduces a distinct proposition for the Soul by Araiya brand. “Soul By Araiya began with a simple observation: Indian travellers are done paying for ceremonies. Soul’s promise is quality without theatre — good rooms, honest food and places worth the journey.”
The decision to launch the brand in Paithalmala was deliberate, offering travellers a different perspective on a state traditionally associated with its coast and backwaters. “Most of India discovers Kerala from the backwaters up; we wanted to introduce it from the hills down,” she said, describing Paithalmala’s shola forests, coffee estates and mist-covered landscape as well suited to an intimate hospitality concept.
She added that the partnership with the Subhakaran family brings together local roots and Araiya’s operating expertise. “The best properties come from owners with deep roots in their destination, and Vihaara’s commitment to Paithalmala matched with Araiya’s operating discipline is exactly that pairing.”
Subhakaran K V, Director, Owner, Vihaara Resort, said the collaboration is centred on preserving the character of the destination while introducing a higher level of hospitality infrastructure. “Paithalmala is one of the most extraordinary yet undiscovered corners of South India, and Soul by Araiya Paithalmala – A Vihaara Resort was built to honour that — its landscapes, its culture and the sense of calm that defines this hill retreat,” he said.
According to Subhakaran, the vision is to offer guests a strong connection with nature without compromising on comfort, wellness or service. Araiya Hotels & Resorts will exclusively manage the property, combining Vihaara’s destination knowledge with the hospitality company’s operational platform.
The opening gives Araiya a foothold in a relatively underdeveloped highland tourism destination while broadening its boutique hospitality portfolio. More significantly, the property illustrates the company’s approach to growth: smaller-scale hotels in distinctive destinations, supported by local ownership and professional management.
