Sri Lanka is sharpening its focus on India’s destination wedding segment with a three-city roadshow designed to position the island nation as a compelling choice for celebrations beyond Indian shores.

Organised by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), the roadshow will travel across Hyderabad (September 26), Surat (September 28) and Pune (September 30), bringing the destination directly to wedding planners and tourism industry stakeholders in three important source markets.

The initiative reflects a more targeted approach to India, one that looks beyond conventional leisure travel to tap into the growing demand for destination-led weddings and multi-day celebrations.

Taking the Conversation to Wedding Planners

Sri Lanka’s proposition lies in the variety it can offer within a relatively compact destination. Beachfront resorts, heritage settings, luxury hotels and culturally immersive experiences allow planners to build everything from intimate ceremonies to elaborate multi-day celebrations.

Its proximity and connectivity to India, combined with an established hospitality ecosystem, also make it particularly relevant for Indian families looking for an international wedding destination without the complexity of long-haul travel.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and Sri Lankan missions in India will participate in the roadshow, with dedicated networking and business interactions aimed at strengthening relationships with the Indian wedding fraternity. This is to outline Sri Lanka Tourism’s strategy for India while building wider awareness around the destination’s venues, hospitality and experiences.

India Remains a Strategic Market

Chamila Jayarathne, Deputy Managing Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, described India as an “extremely important market” and identified weddings as a significant opportunity for deeper engagement. He pointed that, “The growing interest from Indian couples and families is a strong indication of the potential this segment holds. Through the three-city roadshow, we look forward to connecting with India’s wedding fraternity and showcasing the diverse possibilities Sri Lanka offers for memorable destination weddings.”

Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, highlighted a broader shift in what families and planners expect from destination weddings—from simply choosing a picturesque setting to finding destinations capable of delivering seamless hospitality, distinctive experiences and highly personalised celebrations. “Sri Lanka has a compelling story to tell in this space, with its beaches, luxury resorts, heritage, culture and experiential offerings. This roadshow is designed to take that story directly to the wedding planners who are influencing destination choices to help build wider awareness and interest around Sri Lanka as a wedding destination,” he said.

The roadshow is a play for greater mindshare among the professionals shaping those choices, as Sri Lanka seeks to translate its proximity to India into a stronger position within the country’s destination wedding economy.
