Tripura is set for a major boost in heritage tourism with the redevelopment of the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Kunjaban, Agartala, into a luxury heritage hotel under the Taj brand. The project aims to blend the state’s royal legacy with modern hospitality infrastructure and position Tripura more prominently on India’s tourism map.
The initiative is being developed through a partnership between the Government of Tripura and Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), part of the Taj group, with completion targeted for October 2028.

Landmark Heritage Project
The foundation stone was laid by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, underlining the project’s political and developmental significance.
Officials said the heritage hotel is expected to boost tourism inflows, generate local employment, and attract private investment into Tripura’s growing hospitality sector.
Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, Pushpabanta Palace later served as the Raj Bhavan until 2018 and remains one of the state’s most important royal-era landmarks. The redevelopment will preserve its architectural heritage while converting it into a high-end hospitality destination.
