The inaugural edition of Himalayan O₂ – The Tehri Lake Festival was launched at Tehri Lake by Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, reinforcing the state government’s vision of developing the region into a global hub for tourism and adventure sports. The event drew Indian and international athletes, tourists, and local residents, showcasing Tehri’s growing profile as a destination that combines adventure sports, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.

Addressing the gathering, the CM highlighted that, “Tehri Lake is steadily emerging as a major international destination for tourism, sports, culture, and nature-based experiences.” He noted that such initiatives will create new avenues for employment and entrepreneurship for local communities.

The festival integrates tourism, sports, environmental awareness, and local culture on a single platform, further strengthening Uttarakhand’s positioning on the global adventure tourism map.

Infrastructure Investments in the Region

As part of the state’s broader development agenda, projects worth over ₹1,300 crore are currently underway in the Tehri region. These include:

  • Development of Tehri Lake tourism infrastructure
  • Construction of a ring road around the lake
  • Development of Timad village as a tourism village

In addition, the Koti Colony–New Tehri Ropeway was announced to further enhance connectivity and tourism infrastructure.

Several public representatives and officials attended the event, including Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal and Tehri MP Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah, along with district officials, athletes, and large numbers of local residents and visitors.

Leaders emphasised that collaborative efforts between government, communities, and stakeholders will be key to accelerating Tehri’s development and enhancing its national and global recognition.

Boost to Adventure & Tourism

The festival featured a range of water and adventure sports such as kayaking, canoeing, jet-skiing, parasailing, and scuba diving, reflecting the region’s growing potential in the adventure sports sector. Modern training facilities are also being developed to support young athletes from the state to compete at national and international levels.

Notably, this marks the third international-level sporting event hosted at Tehri Lake in the past two months, signalling its rapid rise as a premier adventure sports destination.

The initiative aligns with the broader development vision supported by Narendra Modi, who has consistently encouraged efforts to promote tourism and infrastructure development in Uttarakhand.

The state is also promoting other high-profile sporting events, including a high-altitude marathon at Adi Kailash and the MTB Challenge in Mana Village, aimed at expanding Uttarakhand’s adventure tourism footprint.
