Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has signed a greenfield project to develop a 300-key Taj Hotel in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, marking the company’s expansion into one of India’s prominent spiritual destinations.
Developed in partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited, the project will be built across 70 acres in phases.
The resort is planned to include a wellness centre, two speciality restaurants, a bar lounge, pool bar, swimming pool, fitness centre and spa. It will also feature banquet and convention spaces, along with meeting rooms designed for social gatherings and MICE events.
Boosting infrastructure & connectivity
According to Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development, IHCL, Rameswaram’s growing infrastructure and connectivity are creating opportunities across religious, spiritual, leisure and MICE tourism.
The resort will have direct beach access and connectivity to NH87, with its location near the iconic Pamban Bridge placing it within reach of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, a major pilgrimage landmark.
Rameswaram is also witnessing infrastructure upgrades, including the expansion of NH87 to a four-lane highway and the redevelopment of its railway station. A proposed domestic airport in the region is expected to further strengthen connectivity.
For IHCL, the signing reflects the growing opportunity to expand its hospitality footprint beyond established urban and leisure markets, while tapping into the evolving tourism potential of pilgrimage-led destinations.
