The Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport to be launched on 1 August at Bhogapuram marks a significant addition to India’s expanding aviation infrastructure. Developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), the greenfield airport has been designed not just to meet current demand but to support the long-term growth of Andhra Pradesh’s economy and eastern India's aviation network.
The airport begins operations with an initial capacity of six million passengers annually, with a master plan that allows expansion beyond 40 million passengers per annum, reflecting the state's long-term infrastructure ambitions.
Beyond Passenger Traffic
Equipped with a 3,800-metre Code 4E runway, an integrated passenger terminal and dedicated cargo facilities, the airport is designed to handle both domestic and international operations. Its cargo infrastructure is expected to strengthen exports from sectors including pharmaceuticals, seafood, electronics and advanced manufacturing, while improving logistics efficiency across the Visakhapatnam Economic Region.
Strategically located near Visakhapatnam, the airport is expected to serve as the primary aviation gateway for North Coastal Andhra, as well as neighbouring districts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh, creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and industrial investment.
Infrastructure with a Long-Term Vision
Beyond aviation, Bhogapuram represents a broader infrastructure play. Investments in approach roads, highway connectivity and public transport are expected to integrate the airport with regional industrial corridors, supporting faster movement of both passengers and freight.
Sustainability is also central to the project’s design, with renewable energy integration, rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient infrastructure incorporated to reduce long-term operating costs and environmental impact.
With all regulatory approvals in place, Bhogapuram International Airport is positioned to become more than a transport hub—it is a strategic asset that strengthens Andhra Pradesh's competitiveness as an investment, manufacturing and logistics destination.
