Germany is strengthening its position as a preferred destination for Indian travellers, reporting steady tourism growth despite global geopolitical uncertainties.
According to the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), the country recorded 174.9 million overnight stays between January and May 2026, up 1.3% year-on-year, while international overnight stays remained stable at 28.7 million.
India Strategy Focuses on Experience-Led Travel
India continues to be an important growth market, with 350,488 overnight stays by Indian travellers during the same period. May alone accounted for 86,870 overnight stays, reflecting sustained demand for immersive travel experiences.
Building on this momentum, the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) India has outlined four focus areas for 2026—Culture, Cities, Cuisine, and Family, Friends & Nature—to attract Indian travellers seeking deeper and more meaningful experiences.
“Indian travellers are increasingly exploring Germany beyond its iconic landmarks, choosing longer stays and authentic regional experiences,” said Romit Theophilus, Director, Marketing & Sales Office, India, GNTO. “Our 2026 strategy highlights Germany's stories, flavours and cultural richness to inspire repeat and experience-led travel.”
A major cultural highlight for 2026 is the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Wagner Festival, celebrating composer Richard Wagner's legacy through performances and events across Germany.
German Cities Drive Urban Tourism Growth
Urban tourism remains another key focus, with Berlin leading through new cultural attractions and events, while Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt continue to attract leisure and business travellers alike.
Germany is also promoting its culinary heritage, showcasing its 13 wine regions, nearly 1,500 breweries and UNESCO-recognised bread culture, alongside seasonal food festivals that appeal to the growing interest in gastronomic tourism among Indian travellers.
Complementing these experiences is the Family, Friends & Nature campaign, highlighting Germany's extensive cycling routes, scenic wine trails and outdoor experiences that cater to multigenerational, wellness and sustainable travel.
Going forward, GNTO India plans to deepen engagement through trade partnerships, influencer collaborations and thematic campaigns, positioning Germany as a destination that offers Indian travellers rich cultural experiences, vibrant cities, authentic cuisine and immersive nature-based holidays.
