South Africa Rolls Out 24-48-Hour ETA to Ease Travel for Eligible Indian Visitors
A new digital ETA system offers faster online travel authorisation with processing in 24-48 hours.

South Africa has launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a fully digital system designed to simplify travel for eligible Indian passport holders visiting for tourism or business for up to 90 days.
The ETA allows eligible travellers to complete the entire application online, with processing targeted within 24-48 hours. Linked digitally to the traveller’s passport, the ETA eliminates the need for a physical visa sticker and supports multiple entries during its validity.
Applications can be submitted through the official South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal by creating an account, uploading the required documents, completing biometric verification via smartphone, paying the application fee and tracking the application online.
Enhancing Visitor Convenience
The ETA is currently available for arrivals through O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), Cape Town International Airport and Lanseria International Airport, with additional ports of entry to be added in phases. Final admission remains subject to immigration clearance on arrival.
The initiative is part of South Africa’s broader digital transformation of its immigration system, combining automated processing and biometric verification to improve traveller convenience while strengthening border security.
Commenting on the launch, Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head – MEISEA, South African Tourism, said, “South Africa’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation makes travel planning simpler and faster for eligible Indian visitors, allowing them to spend less time on paperwork and more time looking forward to the country's diverse experiences.”
To support the rollout, South African Tourism has launched a digital awareness campaign across its social media platforms. With outbound travel from India continuing to grow, the ETA is expected to further enhance South Africa’s appeal by making travel more convenient for eligible visitors.
