Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has announced the signing of a Taj hotel in Cairo, marking the luxury brand’s debut in Egypt and a key milestone in its international expansion strategy. The 300-key Taj Cairo will be located at Opera Square, a historic and culturally significant district in the heart of the Egyptian capital.
Overlooking the iconic Azbakeya Garden—one of Cairo’s oldest public parks—the hotel will offer verdant views within a heritage urban setting. Situated in a designated heritage zone and a short drive from the Nile, the property will place guests at the centre of Cairo’s storied past while ensuring seamless connectivity to the city’s key districts.
Heritage-led redevelopment with global hospitality standards
Taj Cairo will be developed through the transformation of the historic Grand Continental Hotel. The project will retain key elements of the original façade and architectural character, while integrating contemporary design, world-class amenities and Taj’s signature hospitality. The hotel will feature all-day dining and specialty restaurants, wellness facilities, and extensive banqueting spaces for corporate meetings and social events.
Commenting on the development, Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, IHCL, said Cairo’s rich cultural heritage and strategic location at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Europe make it a vital hub for global tourism and trade. He added that the Taj brand’s entry into Cairo aligns with IHCL’s focus on establishing a presence in leading gateway cities worldwide, and acknowledged the support of Egypt’s Prime Minister, H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly.
Hisham El Demery, Chief Executive Officer of E.G.O.T.H (Egyptian General Company for Tourism & Hotels), said the redevelopment represents a defining moment in the restoration of Egypt’s architectural heritage. He noted that the partnership with IHCL combines heritage conservation with international hospitality expertise, creating a destination expected to contribute significantly to Cairo’s tourism landscape and ongoing urban revitalisation.
Known as the ‘City of a Thousand Minarets’, Cairo is Egypt’s cultural, political and economic epicentre, home to global landmarks such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, alongside its historic mosques and bustling bazaars.
